PER – The climate crisis in the dock – a series of interactive sessions for secondary
school students<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In the second half of the 2023\/2024 school year, Friends of the Earth Hungary started a
series of interactive climate-related activities for secondary school students across the
country entitled “PER – The climate crisis in the dock”. The programme involved 9
institutions, where a total of 11 sessions were delivered to 391 students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The programme consists of two parts – a lecture and a situation game. During the lecture, we
explore why it is important to talk about climate change and the difference between past heat
waves and current global warming. Then we get to know international and national
environmental policy goals, discussing what tools are available to us if the strategies and
regulations created by decision-makers fail to materialise and threaten our rights to a clean
and healthy environment. Through illustrative examples, we will introduce participants to the
world of climate initiatives launched by social actors.
In the second half of the session, we look for the real culprits of the climate crisis through
a situation game. In the game, we will model a climate litigation case where participants have
certain roles e.g. stakeholders of companies, capitalism, consumers, different governments
etc. and prove in a court trial why they cannot be held responsible for the cause of climate
change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The session ends with reflection on the lecture and the situation game, highlighting the real
causes of the climate crisis and possible solutions to help mitigate its consequences. The
activities are interactive, and participants can share and discuss their ideas and concerns
